Dr. Katharine Hawkes

Founder, CEO and President

As a first generation college student, higher education has been a driving force in Dr. Hawkes’ life. And as the daughter of an immigrant and military veteran, raised in an impoverished community, her experiences have provided her with a deep understanding of socioeconomic inequities and their associated health disparities.

Dr. Hawkes has extensive experience as an educator, particularly with at-risk and disadvantaged youth, and created a literacy program that has improved the literacy of children in over 38 countries. She is an avid believer in volunteerism and contributes to various organizations in the community such as the EVMS HOPES clinic and Medical Reserve Corps. She also serves on the Marcus Alert Statewide Stakeholder Planning Group and the EVMS/NPS Get Real Steering Committee. Her current academic research is on gestational diabetes, progesterone injections during pregnancy to prevent pre-term birth, maternal smoking, and sexual coercion.

Dr. Hawkes earned a Doctorate of Health Sciences from Eastern Virginia Medical School, summa cum laude. She also earned a Master of Public Health degree and Epidemiology Graduate Certificate, respectively, from Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University.
